Soul Portrait 10 – Amber Mark

A quick ink drawing on paper of singer songwriter Amber Mark. I’m new to Amber but I love her song “Competition” and “Love me right”. I don’t know much about her backstory but it sounds like she spent time in the US and Europe. Support her music here.
Whats this? This is a series of portraits I started several years ago for fun practice. I draw or paint portraits of Soul musicians I like. The last one was of Fatima from Sweden. Check it out here

Soul Portrait 9- Fatima (Sweden)

I think I’ve been hearing her name around the blogosphere for a minute. I remember seeing the cover for the Yellow Memories LP too. While installing the Of Love and Riots show my boy Bennie was playing some of her songs and I wanted to hear more of her once he told me who it was. My favorite songs are “Warm Eyes”, “Do Better”, and “Family”.

If you’re not hip, this is an ongoing series of portraits based on Soul musicians from all over the world. I did a similar series of Jazz musicians for 3 years. If you love soul, please check out the artists I mention, especially if you’re unfamiliar with them.

Soul Portrait 8- Chantae Cann

I found Chantae Cann through a post my Muphoric Sounds partner made. I had seen her post about this group Jaspects and not listened to it for quite awhile. Then when i listened I found a song called “Find my way to love” which is gorgeous. Chantae’s voice is a breath of fresh air, so clear, melodic, and powerful.Another of my favorites by her is “Da da n Da” with Snarky Puppy. And I can’t forget her rendition of “People Make the World Go Round”
If you like what you hear, support her here.

Soul Portrait 7-Ego Ella May

I believe I first came across Ella May’s work through Moovmnt.com It’s hard for me to hear a song and immediately be hooked, but thats how I felt after hearing “Underwater” for the first time. I must have played it 10 times in a row just to get the melody straight. I’m hopeful for a new release from this incredible UK vocalist. Her latest song is called “How Far” and it too slaps.Check her out!

Soul Portrait 2- Anita Baker

Welcome to a new series of portraits based on soul musicians. I’ll be experimenting with different styles as usual and putting up some classic and questionable soul artists.  This one was done with ink, markers, on ink jet paper. I t wrinkled, but it was still fun to do.
Anita Baker: I grew up listening to Ms. Baker and always loved her voice. I play the classics like Rapture, Good love, and Angel . Long live that deep voice of Anita! Some folks that have sampled her sound that I love are Thee Satisfaction, Ras Kass, and Abstract Tribe Unique.

Soul Portrait 1- Andrew Ashong

Discovered Andrew through Gilles Peterson’s show and have been listening ever since. Dig the brothers sound and he is the first in a new series of art and illustration featuring Soul musicians. So look out for Portraiture and Typography similar to the Jazz Series and very experimental.
Some of my favorite songs by Andrew so far are Flowers, Never dreamed, and Don’t know why.
