Video – People’s Kitchen Collective

Me and my wife volunteered to help with PKC’s mission. Her, much more than me, taking the lead on cooking for hundreds of people. Super proud to work with these homies and all the good people who came to help and eat! Follow the Peoples Kitchen Collective here. Also, my crew Trust Your Struggle volunteered some artwork to be printed along with several other artists which you can see in the video.

Kindred Journey 6 – Diane Yang

I heard about Diane Yang from the Zagat series by Jessica Sanchez on Foodways. Diane was born and raised in the states, but her parents are Hmong from Laos/Cambodia. She is the executive pastry chef at a restaurant in Minneapolis (home to a big Hmong population) called “Spoon and Stable” where she makes beautiful, yet simple creations influenced by modern and classic techniques. Diane began school at Le Cordon Bleu in 2000 and began working for some incredible restaurants and chefs not long after. I was intrigued by the amazing look of her pastries because I love them, but also by her cultural pride and achievements.

Five & Dime (Art + Food) come eat!

March 13th from 8-11pm

Next week if you are in the Bay Area and you are a food/art lover you are invited to come break bread with myself and Chef Amanda Yee.  She’s cooking up an amazing meal and I will be talking about illustration and storytelling. Five & Dime supper club is described as

“Our Supper Club is about re-creating & reinterpreting the in-home dinner experience which we all know & love—minus that one crazy uncle who comes around the holidays. At Five and Dime, dinner is about the exchange of creativity, excellent conversation, & a chance to meet & build relationships in an easy going atmosphere. Here at our table, strangers become known and good music graces your ear, while you dine on Chef Amanda Yee’s fearless & tempting culinary creations.

This experience lasts from 7-9pm, and is a combination of meditation, eating, and art. We offer space for the participant to meet with other Bay Area Artists over a shared meal, generate and share ideas, and engage in critical dialogue.

East Bay Edibles x Tamales La Oaxaquena

When I was living in West Oakland I met a very generous, loving, and talented family. Carolina Santos, her momma Oliva, and her son Isaac (who my son often played with). Carolina, my friend and old neighbor often offered to let me try the food her mom and her made, but one day I tried the mole her mom made and was floored. The best I have tried ever! Delicious.

Living next door to her family I got to hear about how challenging it is to run a business centered around food. The catering they do, the wins, the losses, the customers who are supportive and the ones who couldn’t begin to imagine the amount of history, dedication, and hard work go into the tamales they eat. I vowed to lend a hand artistically, but fell short of my initial promise. So when I got the word that Carolina wanted to do an article about the business I jumped at the opportunity to do some illustration. As I have mentioned food related art in the past year; it goes right along with the work I’ve been developing. And this family business needs the attention of anyone who appreciates good food and the history of Mexican food. Not only do these two make delicious food, but they can tell you stories about what life was like in Oaxaca Mexico and why that is important to how they make the food.

If you want to know more about them I highly suggest checking out this issue of East Bay Edibles. The article is called “Something Spicy, something sweet”. Edibles, in case you don’t know it is a national magazine about good food, the people that sell it and grow it. Hit up Carolina at tamalesoaxaca@gmail.com or call em at 510-613-5836

Big shout out to Edibles editor Cheryl Koehler for publishing the piece!
