Rest In Peace Megah Brown

Rest In Peace Megah Brown

Its been about a year since Megah Brown passed away after a motorcycle accident. I met Damion the first time he cut my hair some 10 or 12 years ago. I remember the first thing he said was “what have you done with your hair?!”. My afro was wild at the time which is totally fine but I wanted a trim.

Damion cut my hair and lined me up real nice that day and cut my hair and my son’s hair for many years. If you have followed my journey as a self published illustrator and author you’ll recognize Damion as he was the one cutting my hair in the book trailer for the first book I wrote and published, Furqan’s First Flat Top.

Although I only got to kick it with him once or twice outside of the barbershop, It didnt hit me how special the relationship between people and their barber can be until I heard all the stories from his former customers, his regulars; at the funeral. Damion was not only an excellent barber, but he was a beer maker, a motorcycle enthusiast, a sports fanatic, a hip hop head, a poet, a former graf writer, a husband, and a father.

Many times I sat in his chair or watched my son get a cut and just talked about life, being fathers, our families, etc. I couldn’t keep up with sports but I could talk his ear off about art and music and he let me. And he had a strong opinion of course, haha. He couldn’t stand it when I was late. I found out after talking to many other former clients that they got the same treatment. But that was only because he was serious about his craft and did not want his time to be wasted.

A few weeks ago his wife Mimi held a remembrance day where folks who knew him intimately, former customers, and friends could get together and reminisce. We all miss him dearly. Damion leaves behind a wife and a family. If you’d like to contribute to their family here’s the link to do so.

Thx for reading, Rest in Peace Damion Hunter aka Megah Man.

Dig this? Check out this drawing of Latino Comics Expo co-founder Ricardo Padilla or this KALW interview w/ Damion. It really shows his character straight from his voice.
